Derrick Deshaun Watson was born on September 14, 1995, in Gainesville, Georgia. He attended Gainesville High School, where he achieved numerous state records, including 17,134 total yards and 218 total touchdowns. Watson became Gainesville High School’s first-ever freshman starting quarterback and led the team to a state championship in his junior year. In his sophomore and senior years, he guided Gainesville to the state semifinals. Watson was highly recruited and verbally committed to Clemson University in February 2012, recognized as the top quarterback recruit for the 2014 class by ESPN 300.
Watson enrolled at Clemson in January 2014 and quickly made an impact, becoming the starting quarterback during his freshman season and setting a school record with six touchdown passes and 435 yards in his first start. Despite injuries, including a torn ACL, he led Clemson to an undefeated regular season in 2015 and an ACC Championship. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist, finishing third in the balloting, and won the Davey O’Brien Award and ACC Player of the Year. In 2016, his junior year, Watson once again guided Clemson to the College Football Playoff National Championship, where he led a comeback victory over Alabama, securing Clemson’s second national championship and earning Offensive MVP honors with 420 passing yards and three touchdowns. He became the first player in college football history to achieve over 4,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a single season.
Watson entered the NFL and was drafted by the Houston Texans in the first round, 12th overall, of the 2017 NFL Draft. He quickly became a key player for the Texans, demonstrating his talent with multiple record-setting performances, including tying the NFL rookie touchdown record with five total scores in a single game. He received Pro Bowl honors in three consecutive seasons from 2018 to 2020 and led the league in passing yards in 2020. In 2022, Watson was traded to the Cleveland Browns, signing a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract. However, his tenure with the Browns has been impacted by injuries, including a ruptured Achilles tendon in 2024 and a re-rupture in 2025, potentially sidelining him until 2026. He is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.
