Deshea Townsend

Trevor Deshea Townsend was born on September 8, 1975, in Batesville, Mississippi. He played high school football for the South Panola Tigers, where he was a quarterback and led his team to an undefeated 15-0 record and the 1993 Mississippi State 5A championship. He continued his collegiate career at the University of Alabama, majoring in business management. During his time with the Alabama Crimson Tide, Townsend recorded seven career interceptions and was named All-SEC in 1995, 1996, and 1997. Notably, in 1995, he returned a blocked field goal attempt 90 yards for a touchdown against Georgia, contributing to a 31-0 victory.

Townsend was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fourth round (117th overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft. He spent twelve seasons with the Steelers, evolving from a special teams player and nickelback to a starting cornerback. He secured 322 tackles, 15.5 quarterback sacks, and 18 interceptions throughout his Steelers tenure. A pivotal moment in his playing career was a crucial sack on Seattle quarterback Matt Hasselbeck during the final minutes of Super Bowl XL, helping to secure the Steelers’ victory. He also won a second Super Bowl ring with the Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII. In 2002, he signed a four-year, $4.20 million contract with the Steelers, and another four-year, $8 million contract in 2006. His NFL playing career concluded in 2010 after a season with the Indianapolis Colts, where he played in eight games and recorded 10 tackles.

Following his playing career, Townsend transitioned to coaching, bringing 25 years of combined NFL coaching and playing experience to his roles. He began his coaching journey as Assistant Defensive Backs Coach for the Arizona Cardinals in 2011. He then moved to college football, serving as Cornerbacks Coach at Mississippi State University from 2013 to 2015, where he coached Nickoe Whitley to 5 interceptions and an All-SEC selection. His NFL coaching career continued with the Tennessee Titans (Defensive Backs Coach, 2016-2017), New York Giants (Assistant Defensive Backs Coach, 2018), Chicago Bears (Secondary Coach, 2019-2021), and Jacksonville Jaguars (Passing Game Coordinator & Cornerbacks Coach, 2022-2023). Currently, he serves as the Defensive Passing Game Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach for the Detroit Lions, a position he accepted in 2024.
