Deshea Townsend

Deshea Townsend has transitioned from a Super Bowl champion NFL cornerback to a respected coach, imparting his expertise on defensive backs across multiple NFL teams. After leading the South Panola Tigers to an undefeated 15-0 record and the 1993 Mississippi State 5A championship, Deshea Townsend continued a distinguished collegiate career at the University of Alabama, where he majored in business management. As a key player for the Alabama Crimson Tide, Townsend recorded seven career interceptions and earned All-SEC honors in 1995, 1996, and 1997. A highlight of his college tenure included a 90-yard blocked field goal return for a touchdown against Georgia in 1995, contributing to a decisive 31-0 victory.

He commenced his coaching journey as Assistant Defensive Backs Coach for the Arizona Cardinals from 2011 to 2012. He then moved to the collegiate level, serving as Cornerbacks Coach at Mississippi State University from 2013 to 2015, where he notably coached Nickoe Whitley to 5 interceptions and an All-SEC selection. His NFL coaching progression continued as the Defensive Backs Coach for the Tennessee Titans from 2016 to 2017, and then as Assistant Defensive Backs Coach for the New York Giants in 2018. Building on his extensive experience, Townsend joined the Chicago Bears as Secondary Coach from 2019 to 2021.

He then served as the Passing Game Coordinator & Cornerbacks Coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2022 to 2023, showcasing his expanded expertise in defensive strategy. Currently, Deshea Townsend holds the position of Defensive Passing Game Coordinator and Defensive Backs Coach for the Detroit Lions, a role he accepted in 2024, continuing to shape top-tier defensive talent in the NFL.
