Born on November 15, 1993, Arik Armstead attended Pleasant Grove High School in Elk Grove, California, where he excelled in both football and basketball. He was recognized as a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and ranked as the sixth-best defensive end in his class, initially committing to the University of Southern California before choosing the University of Oregon. During his college career with the Oregon Ducks from 2012 to 2014, Armstead demonstrated his abilities by playing in all 13 games as a true freshman in 2012, recording 26 tackles and a half-sack. He continued to compete in football and briefly joined the Ducks basketball team, later deciding to focus exclusively on football, leading to his entry into the NFL Draft in 2015.
Armstead was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the first round as the 17th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. His professional career with the 49ers spanned nine seasons, where he consistently contributed as a defensive lineman. A significant turning point in his career came during the 2019 season, recognized as a breakout year, where he recorded a team-leading 10 sacks and 54 tackles. This performance led to Super Bowl LIV where the 49ers faced the Kansas City Chiefs. In March 2020, Armstead signed a five-year, $85 million contract extension with the 49ers, underscoring his value to the team. By 2024, he transferred to the Jacksonville Jaguars, securing a three-year, $51 million contract.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Armstead has been recognized for his commitment to community work. In 2024, he was honored with the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, an accolade that highlights his philanthropic efforts and community involvement.
