Dhairya Dand, born in 1989 in Nasik, India, is an Indian-American inventor and artist based in New York City. His early life involved a diverse family background, with his father working as a plumber without completing high school, and his mother as a Sanskrit teacher. He pursued undergraduate studies in computer science at Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute and design courses at the Industrial Design Centre. His career progression includes living in Singapore, Phnom Penh, Tokyo, and London before moving to the United States to complete a Master of Science degree in Media, Arts, and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab.
Dand’s work focuses on the intersection of humanity and technology, investigating the human body as a medium for computation, new materials for embodying interactions, and design for mindfulness. He has held roles as an HCI researcher at MIT, was part of the founding team for Amazon’s moonshot C-Lab working on Alexa devices, and served engineering at Google. He is also a scientific advisor on the XPRIZE Foundation’s board and an artist exhibiting at institutions such as the NEW Museum in NYC and the Keio-NUS CUTE Center in Singapore. He currently leads ODD Industries, a futurist factory and lab.
Throughout his career, Dand has been recognized with numerous awards, including being a finalist for the Smithsonian’s National Design Award in 2014, and being named to Forbes’ ’30 under 30′ list twice (2015 for Design, 2016 for Manufacturing and Energy). Wired UK recognized him as an Innovation Fellow in 2014, and he was an INK Fellow. His work has been exhibited globally at venues such as Tokyo Design Week, CHI Paris, and TEI Barcelona. He has also delivered numerous talks worldwide at institutions including Harvard University, MIT, and TEDx events.
