Bulgarian footballer Dimitar Berbatov is widely regarded as one of his country’s greatest-ever footballers. From his early career with Bulgarian giants CSKA Sofia, through his time in Germany with Bayern Leverkusen, to his success in England with Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, Berbatov built a reputation for his goal-scoring ability and poise, netting over 300 goals in more than 700 club and country appearances. He remains the Bulgarian national team’s all-time top scorer and was their proud captain for four years. Now retired, he has published his autobiography, In My Own Way, and runs the philanthropic Dimitar Berbatov Foundation, helping Bulgarian youngsters to fulfil their potential.
Berbatov’s first taste of football glory was with CSKA Sofia, winning the 1999 Bulgarian Cup during his first season as a professional. His talent soon came to the attention of foreign clubs, and in 2000, he was signed by Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen. It was here that Berbatov truly built his reputation, scoring 91 goals in 201 appearances and helping them to the UEFA Champions League final. In 2006, he became the most expensive Bulgarian footballer ever when historic English club Tottenham Hotspur signed him for just shy of £11 million. Within three seasons, he was tempted to Manchester United for three times that amount. He enjoyed the best years of his career at Old Trafford, helping them to win two Premier Leagues. He also reached his second Champions League Final with the club.
After a successful spell with Fulham, Berbatov’s playing career wound down with spells in France, Greece, and India. Today, he focuses on his family and his work with the Dimitar Berbatov foundation.
