The formidable Dominick “The Dominator” Cruz is a professional mixed martial artist, who competes in the Bantamweight division of the UFC, where he is a 2x UFC Bantamweight Champion. He has also taken part in World Extreme Cagefighting, and was the promotions final WEC Bantamweight Champion. Outside of the cage he also works as a sports analyst and commentator.
Born and raised in California, and later in Arizona, Cruz started wrestling in his early teens and on through High School. Injury ruined his chances of taking up a scholarship to attend the University of Northern Colorado, and then while studying to be a firefighter he became a full-time MMA fighter.
Cruz began his professional MMA career in 2005 competing in the Rage in the Cage and Total Combat organisations, before joining the WEC. He became the WEC Bantamweight Champion in 2010, and retained the title two times, as well as becoming the first UFC Bantamweight Champion after WEC and UFC merged in October 2010. However, during his second UFC title defense, Cruz sustained a string of injuries which ruled him out of the cage for nearly three years. He returned in 2014, but again injury sidelined him for most of 2015. Then after over four years since his last title fight, he regained the title in 2016. Despite continued battles with injuries he has remained with the promotion ever since, and is now considered to be one of the best MMA fighters of his generation.
