During her early years in the U.S., Jackson navigated periods of homelessness and was introduced to the ballroom scene in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1993. This environment provided community and a foundation for her future endeavors, including her involvement with various ‘houses,’ eventually settling with the House of Sinclair in New York City. Jackson initially undertook modeling work without payment to develop opportunities, which led to her becoming a resident model for fashion designer Adrian Alicea in 2009. That same year, she walked for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, marking a significant step in her modeling career. In 2013, she published her autobiography, “The Transsexual from Tobago (Revised),” detailing her life experiences.
A pivotal career development occurred in 2018 when Jackson secured the leading role of Elektra Abundance on the FX television series “Pose.” This series, set in the ballroom subculture of late-1980s New York City, garnered critical acclaim for its portrayal of Black and Latino LGBTQ+ individuals and featured the largest cast of transgender actors for a scripted network series. Her role as Elektra continued through three seasons until 2021.
