In 1985, he was named the AL Most Valuable Player, batting .324 with 35 home runs and a league-leading 145 RBIs and 48 doubles. He secured nine Gold Glove Awards and three Silver Slugger Awards during his career. Mattingly also tied a major-league record by hitting home runs in eight consecutive games in 1987 and set a record with six grand slams in a single season the same year. He served as captain of the Yankees from 1991 to 1995, retiring in 1997.

After his playing career, Mattingly transitioned to coaching roles. He served as the hitting coach for the New York Yankees from 2004 to 2006, where the team set a franchise record with 242 home runs in 2004. He then moved to the Los Angeles Dodgers, serving as hitting coach and later as manager from 2011 to 2015, leading the team to three consecutive postseason appearances.
