Donatella Francesca Versace was born on May 2, 1955, in Reggio Calabria, Italy. The youngest of four children, she developed an early interest in fashion, influenced by her brother Gianni Versace. In the mid-1970s, Donatella studied literature and languages in Florence, while also commuting to Milan to work with Gianni. By 1978, the Versace brand was established, with Donatella serving as vice president. She collaborated closely with Gianni on various projects, contributing to the brand’s image, styling, and the design of accessories, shoes, and handbags. Her creative input positioned her as a key partner and muse for Gianni, shaping the distinctive Versace aesthetic.
Following Gianni Versace’s death in 1997, Donatella assumed the role of creative director for the Versace brand. Her initial haute couture show for Versace Atelier debuted in July 1998 at the Hôtel Ritz Paris, where she continued her brother’s tradition of runway presentations. Under her leadership, Versace expanded its global presence and influence, developing notable advertising campaigns featuring celebrities such as Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé. Donatella played a significant role in designing luxury resorts, including Palazzo Versace Australia in 2000 and Palazzo Versace Dubai in 2016. She also oversaw the repositioning of the Versus line, appointing designers Christopher Kane and Jonathan Anderson to revive the brand’s appeal.
Donatella’s contributions to the fashion industry have been recognized through numerous awards, including the World Fashion Award as Designer of the Year in 2005, the Fashion Icon of the Year award by the British Fashion Council in 2017, and the International CFDA Award in 2018. In 2023, she received the Humanitarian Award for Equity and Inclusivity at the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italia Sustainable Fashion Awards. Her career at Versace culminated in her announcement in March 2025 that she would depart as CEO, a position she held for nearly 28 years, with Dario Vitale appointed as her successor.
