Doug Jones is a widely renowned American actor, contortionist, mime artist who is best known for portraying non-human creatures through visual effects and make-up. Most famously, Jones has collaborated with acclaimed filmmaker, Guillermo del Toro. He has appeared in films such as Mimic, Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, Crimson Peak, The Shape of Water, amongst others.
Other screen credits include Hocus Pocus, Tank Girl, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, The Bye Bye Man and many more.
Jones has an impressive list of appearances, he has played roles in Falling Skies, The Strain and secured the role of Captain Saru in Star Trek: Discovery. Born in Indianapolis, Jones graduated from Ball State University and began his career in the television and film industry, when he first played the character ‘Mac Tonight’ in a 1980’s ad. He later moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career full-time.
Jones is mainly renowned for his work under prosthetic makeup, however he has performed in many films without prosthetics, in films such as Batman Returns and Mystery Men.
In 2005, he worked again with Mexican director Guillermo del Toro on the acclaimed film, Pan’s Labyrinth. Most recently, Jones appeared in Beneath the Leaves in 2019, a thriller that was released on Netflix. In the same year he also appeared in ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ and ‘Better Things’. Jones is married to Laurie Pontoni and describes himself as a “dyed-in-the-wool Christian from the Midwest”.
