Doug Mirabelli

Doug Mirabelli made his Major League Baseball debut on August 23, 1996, with the San Francisco Giants. His professional journey began after being drafted by the Giants in the fifth round of the 1992 MLB amateur draft, following an all-star designation in the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Hyannis Mets in 1990 during his collegiate career. Mirabelli started his minor league career the same year with the San Jose Giants, advancing through teams including the Shreveport Captains and Fresno Grizzlies. He played for the San Francisco Giants until 2000, often serving in a catcher platoon alongside veterans such as Brent Mayne and Scott Servais, demonstrating consistent performance behind the plate.

In 2001, Mirabelli’s contract was sold to the Texas Rangers, where he served as backup to Iván Rodríguez. Later that same year, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox following an injury to Jason Varitek, hitting an impressive .270 with 9 home runs in his partial season with the team. Mirabelli became widely recognized for his highly effective partnership as the personal catcher for knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, a unique collaboration that significantly contributed to Wakefield’s impressive 8-2 record late in the 2002 season. This partnership solidified his crucial role within the Red Sox organization.
