Born David Drew Pinsky on September 4, 1958, in Pasadena, California, Dr. Drew is the son of Helene Pinsky, a homemaker and singer/actress, and Morton Pinsky, a physician. From an early age, Drew was inspired by his father’s medical practice and decided to pursue a career in medicine. He attended Polytechnic High School before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Amherst College in 1980. Subsequently, he received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Southern California, School of Medicine in 1984. He completed his residency in internal medicine at USC County Hospital and served as chief resident at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, establishing his foundation as a practicing physician.
Dr. Pinsky’s media career began in 1984 while still in medical school, co-hosting “Loveline” on KROQ-FM, a radio show that would later achieve national syndication and an MTV television adaptation. This platform allowed him to dispense advice on sex, relationships, and addiction to a young audience, bridging his medical knowledge with popular culture. Simultaneously, he maintained a private medical practice in Pasadena, specializing in internal and addiction medicine. Over the decades, Dr. Pinsky expanded his television presence, hosting shows such as “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew,” “Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew,” and “Dr. Drew On Call,” using these platforms to demystify rehabilitation processes and discuss public health issues. He also co-authored academic studies, including the first on celebrities and narcissism, published in the Journal of Research in Personality.
Throughout his career, Dr. Pinsky has authored several books, including “Cracked: Putting Broken Lives Together Again” (2003) and the New York Times bestseller “The Mirror Effect: How Celebrity Narcissism is Seducing America” (2009).
