Jan-Harm Pol was born on September 4, 1942, in Wateren, Netherlands, and grew up on his family’s dairy farm. His interest in veterinary medicine began at age twelve when he assisted with a litter of piglets. He pursued his education at Utrecht University, graduating with a degree in veterinary medicine in 1970. After moving to Harbor Beach, Michigan, he worked for a local veterinarian for ten years. In 1981, Dr. Pol and his wife, Diane, established Pol Veterinary Services in Weidman, Michigan, operating initially from their garage. The practice has since grown to serve thousands of clients across rural Michigan, treating a diverse range of animals from small pets to large farm animals. Dr. Pol is recognized for his practical and hands-on approach to veterinary care, often working long hours to address the needs of his community’s animals.
Dr. Pol gained wider recognition as the subject of Nat Geo WILD’s reality television series, “The Incredible Dr. Pol,” which premiered in 2011. The show documents his daily life and work as a veterinarian, highlighting his interactions with animals and their owners. The series celebrated its 100th episode in March 2017 and has aired 24 seasons and over 240 episodes. His son, Charles Pol, was instrumental in developing the concept for the television series. Beyond his television career, Dr. Pol authored the best-selling book “NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON AN ANGUS COW: My Life as a Country Vet,” sharing anecdotes from his career. In 2013, he received an honorary doctorate of public service from Central Michigan University. He also continues to support local philanthropic organizations like 4-H and FFA, promoting animal care education for young adults.
Dr. Pol’s career has involved significant milestones, including establishing his own practice and becoming a public figure through his television show. He has also expanded his brand into various product lines, including pet food and animal feeds. Despite the conclusion of new episodes for “The Incredible Dr. Pol” after 14 years, he continues to operate his veterinary practice. His commitment to ensuring the health and profitability of farmers’ livestock underscores his integral role in the rural community. Dr. Pol is fluent in four languages: English, Dutch, German, and French, further demonstrating his diverse background.
