Dr. Mamina Turegano graduated summa cum laude from Centenary College with studies in neuroscience and piano performance. She earned her medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. Following this, she completed a five-year double residency in internal medicine and dermatology at Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., where she also served as chief resident. After working in private practice in the D.C. area, Dr. Turegano pursued a fellowship in dermatopathology at UCLA in Los Angeles. She later moved to New Orleans, her home city, to continue her practice.
Dr. Turegano has a specialized interest in how nutrition, lifestyle, sleep, and environmental factors contribute to inflammation, aging, and cancer. She integrates holistic practices for patients with conditions ranging from acne to warts. Her background in internal medicine informs her approach to complex medical dermatology, including autoimmune skin diseases and psoriasis. Currently, she practices dermatology and serves as a dermatopathologist for Old Metairie Dermatology, and is a volunteer instructor at Tulane University in the department of dermatology. She has contributed to multiple publications, including the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and JAMA Dermatology, and has received awards such as the American Society of Dermatopathology Mentorship Award.
Dr. Turegano has held leadership roles, including Vice Chair of the South Regional Group Committee of the Women’s Dermatologic Society. Her work has been presented at numerous conferences, including the International Society of Dermatopathology Joint meetings. She is also engaged in public education, hosting the “Skin Deep MDs” podcast with fellow dermatologists Dr. Lindsey Zubritsky and Dr. Jenny Liu, where they discuss skincare myths and treatments. Dr. Turegano is actively involved in platforms like Derm Click, providing accessible virtual dermatological care.
