Michio Kaku was born on January 24, 1947, in San Jose, California. His parents were second-generation Japanese-Americans who met and were interned in the Tule Lake War Relocation Center during World War II. Kaku’s early fascination with physics was sparked by Albert Einstein’s unfinished unified field theory, leading him to dedicate his life to solving this problem. In high school, he built a 2.3 MeV “atom smasher” in his family garage using scrap metal and 22 miles of wire, producing antimatter. This project gained the attention of physicist Edward Teller, who awarded Kaku a Hertz Engineering Scholarship. He attended Harvard College, graduating summa cum laude in 1968 as top of his physics class, and later earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1972. During the Vietnam War, Kaku served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970.
Kaku’s academic career includes serving as a Visitor and Member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and New York University. He currently holds the Henry Semat Chair and Professorship in theoretical physics at the City College of New York. In 1974, alongside Professor Keiji Kikkawa of Osaka University, Kaku co-authored foundational papers for string theory, specifically contributing to the development of string theory in a field form. His research has been published in physics journals and covers areas such as superstring theory, supergravity, supersymmetry, and hadronic physics. He has authored several textbooks on string theory and quantum field theory. Beyond his academic contributions, Kaku is widely recognized as a popularizer of science, dedicated to making complex scientific ideas accessible to the general public.
He has authored numerous popular science books, with titles like “Physics of the Impossible” (2008), “Physics of the Future” (2011), “The Future of the Mind” (2014), and “The God Equation: The Quest for a Theory of Everything” (2021) becoming New York Times bestsellers. His book “Hyperspace” was also recognized as one of the best science books of the year by The New York Times and The Washington Post. Kaku has hosted various television specials for networks such as the BBC, Discovery Channel, History Channel, and Science Channel, including “2057,” “Visions of the Future,” and “Sci Fi Science: Physics of the Impossible.” He hosts the weekly radio program “Exploration” on WBAI in New York and “Science Fantastic,” syndicated to over 130 radio stations in the United States. Kaku also serves on the advisory board of CuriosityStream.
