Multiple Olympic medal winner Gabrielle Lisa Thomas is an American sprinter. She specialises in the 100- and 200-meter distances in track and field. At the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, she won a team silver medal and an individual bronze medal.
When an MRI in 2021 revealed a liver tumour, Thomas was concerned about her health. However, the lesion was benign. At the Tokyo Olympics that year, Thomas competed for the United States in the 200-meter event and ran faster than her 21.61-second performance in the same event at the United States Olympic trials on June 26. Even Thomas was startled by the time; following the race, she commented that it unquestionably altered the way she saw herself as a runner. Thomas finished third in the 200 m finals on August 3, 2021 at the postponed 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo with a time of 21.87, just behind gold medalist Elaine Thompson-Herah and Christine Mboma (silver). Thomas ran anchor three days later, on August 6, 2021, after the American team had advanced to the 4 x 100-meter relay finals. The team finished second to the Jamaican team, earning Thomas and teammates Javianne Oliver, Teahna Daniels, and Jenna Prandini the silver medal.
At the Texas Relays in March 2022, Thomas got her outdoor season off to a strong start by running the fastest 200-meter sprint season debut in history. She recorded the all-time quickest wind-aided time of 21.69 seconds (+3.1 m/s). Just 45 minutes earlier, she won the 100-meter race in 10.92 seconds.
