Dre Bly

Donald André Bly was born on May 22, 1977, in Chesapeake, Virginia. He attended Western Branch High School, where he excelled in both football and baseball. He then enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, playing for the North Carolina Tar Heels football team. In his freshman year, Bly led the nation with 11 interceptions, earning All-American honors, a rare achievement for a freshman. He was a two-time consensus first-team All-American (1996, 1997) and became the only player in UNC and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) history to achieve this distinction twice. During his college career, he set the ACC record for career interceptions with 20. Bly was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014.

Bly was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the second round (41st overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft. He quickly made an impact, contributing to the Rams’ Super Bowl XXXIV victory in his rookie season in 1999. In 2002, he started all 16 games, recording a career-high 64 combined tackles, 21 pass deflections, and four forced fumbles. In 2003, Bly joined the Detroit Lions, where he was selected to two Pro Bowls (2003, 2004) and earned First-team All-Pro honors in 2003. He consistently performed at a high level, tallying numerous interceptions and forced fumbles throughout his four seasons with the Lions.

After his tenure with the Lions, Bly played for the Denver Broncos from 2007 to 2008, where he continued to be a starting cornerback and led the team in interceptions in 2007 with five. He then had a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers in 2009. Following his playing career, Bly transitioned into coaching. He served as the defensive backs coach for the San Diego Fleet in the Alliance of Football in 2018 before joining the North Carolina Tar Heels as their cornerbacks coach from 2019 to 2022. He returned to the Detroit Lions as cornerbacks coach in 2023 and currently serves as the assistant defensive backs coach for the New York Jets, a position he assumed in 2025. He is a recognized figure in football, having been inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
