Rob Lanier, a highly respected collegiate basketball coach, first established his reputation for building competitive programs by leading Siena College to a MAAC Tournament Championship in 2002. During his four-year tenure as head coach at Siena from 2001 to 2005, Lanier further demonstrated his strategic acumen, guiding the team to a 21-11 record in the 2002-03 season and an advancement to the second round of the NIT. Prior to his significant head coaching debut, Lanier obtained a master’s degree in educational counseling from Niagara University in 1993, equipping him with a comprehensive skill set for his decorated coaching career. He served four seasons at the University of Florida from 2007 to 2011.
Lanier also held assistant coaching positions for eight seasons alongside revered coach Rick Barnes, first at Texas from 1999-2001 and then again from 2011-2015, before moving with Barnes to Tennessee where he coached from 2015 to 2019. In 2019, Lanier returned to a head coaching position, taking the helm at Georgia State and quickly transforming the program. His consistent ability to elevate programs and develop student-athletes garnered significant attention across the collegiate landscape. Most recently, Lanier served as head coach for SMU from 2022 to 2024, where he continued to demonstrate his coaching prowess by achieving a 20-13 overall record and an 11-7 mark in conference play in his final season.
Building on this momentum, Rob Lanier was named the 26th head mens basketball coach at Rice University on March 24, 2024. This latest appointment underscores his sustained commitment to program development and athlete success, positioning him to lead Rice to new heights.
