About

Dream Hampton, born in Detroit in 1972, is an American filmmaker, producer, and writer who has significantly contributed to film and social commentary. She honed her craft studying filmmaking at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, laying the groundwork for a career marked by powerful narratives. Her early career also included extensive writing for prominent publications such as Vibe, Essence, Harper’s Bazaar, The Village Voice, Detroit News, and Spin. This dual focus on writing and filmmaking has allowed her to disrupt dominant narratives and amplify marginalized voices, establishing her as a versatile and influential artist.

Hampton’s work often integrates her commitment to social justice. She co-wrote Jay-Z’s 2010 memoir, “Decoded,” and was actively involved in the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement, where she co-organized Black August, a benefit concert for political prisoners. This dedication to activism is a consistent theme throughout her filmography. Her directorial credits include “I Am Ali” (2002), which received critical acclaim, “Black August: A Hip-Hop Documentary Concert” (2010), and “Treasure: From Tragedy to Trans Justice Mapping a Detroit Story” (2015), a poignant documentary highlighting issues of trans justice. These projects demonstrate her consistent use of film as a tool for social change.

A significant milestone in Hampton’s career is her executive producer role for the 2019 Lifetime documentary series “Surviving R. Kelly.” This groundbreaking series directly led to a federal investigation and subsequent charges against R. Kelly, highlighting the real-world impact of her work. The series garnered numerous awards, including a Peabody Award and an MTV Movie Award for Best Documentary. More recently, she served as director and executive producer for “Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop” (2023) and directed “It Was All a Dream” (2024), continuing her exploration of significant cultural narratives through film.
