Duhan van der Merwe was born on June 4, 1995, in George, South Africa. His early rugby career began in his hometown, where he played for Outeniqua High School and quickly gained provincial recognition. He represented the SWD Eagles at youth tournaments, showing his potential from a young age. In 2012 and 2013, he played for South Africa Schools, scoring tries in international series against France and England. He continued his progression by joining the Blue Bulls’ academy in 2014 and representing South Africa Under-20s at the World Rugby U20 Championship, where he contributed to the team reaching the final. After overcoming injuries, he moved to Montpellier in France in 2016, though a hip issue and cultural adjustment limited his playing time.
Van der Merwe joined Edinburgh in 2017. Despite initially failing a medical due to his hip injury, he was signed by then-head coach Richard Cockerill. This move proved to be a turning point, as he became eligible for Scotland on residency grounds in 2020. He made his international debut for Scotland in October 2020, scoring a try against Georgia. He quickly became a key player for the national team, renowned for his impactful performances, particularly against England. In the 2021 Six Nations Championship, he scored the decisive try in Scotland’s victory over England at Twickenham, marking their first win at the stadium since 1983. He finished that campaign as the outright top try scorer, a first for a Scotland player.
His career continued with further notable achievements, including selection for the British & Irish Lions tour to South Africa in 2021, where he featured in all three Tests. He returned to Edinburgh in 2022 after a stint with Worcester Warriors. In 2024, Van der Merwe scored a hat-trick against England in the Six Nations, further solidifying his reputation. His remarkable try-scoring ability led him to surpass Stuart Hogg as Scotland’s all-time leading international try scorer in July 2024. He was also selected for his second British & Irish Lions tour in 2025.
