Dalton Papalii was born on October 11, 1997. He grew up playing rugby league, a sport popular in his family, before transitioning to rugby union at Saint Kentigern College. During his time at Saint Kentigern College, he captained the school’s First XV, leading them to victory in the 2015 Grant Dalton Cup. In 2015, he also captained the New Zealand national schoolboy rugby union team, securing a win against Australia. After completing his schooling, Papalii joined the Auckland development program and played for his local club, Pakuranga. He notably won the Blues Development Player of the Year award twice in 2016 and 2017, demonstrating his potential within the sport’s development pathways.
Papalii made his Super Rugby debut for the Blues in 2018 against the Chiefs. In his second game, he scored a notable solo try against the Sunwolves. His strong performances led to his inclusion in the 32-man All Blacks squad for their northern tour to Japan and Europe in 2018, marking his international debut against Japan on November 3, 2018. The following year, Papalii became a regular presence in the Blues’ back row, earning 21 caps, and was called up for the Rugby Championship, playing against the Springboks. In 2020, he transitioned to Counties Manukau for provincial rugby while continuing to be a key player for the Blues in Super Rugby Aotearoa.
Dalton Papalii’s career continued to advance with sustained strong performances, particularly in defense and tackle counts. His consistent form earned him the Blues captaincy in 2022 and 2023 under Head Coach Leon MacDonald. During his captaincy, he led the team to a final appearance in 2022 and a semi-final in 2023. His leadership and performance were recognized with a selection to the All Blacks Rugby World Cup squad in France. In the 2024 season, relieved of the captaincy, Papalii focused on his primary strengths, leading the Blues in tackle counts with 208 and maintaining his position within the All Blacks squad. He is currently contracted with the Blues until the end of the 2027 season.
