Elin Hilderbrand was born on July 17, 1969, in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. Her early life was marked by summers spent on Cape Cod, a tradition that became deeply ingrained after the loss of her father in a plane crash when she was 16. This personal experience fueled a promise to herself to always find a way to spend summers by the beach. She pursued higher education at Johns Hopkins University, majoring in creative writing, and later became a teaching and writing fellow at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop.
Hilderbrand moved to Nantucket in 1993, initially working in classified ads for a local paper. Her professional writing career began in 2000 with the publication of her debut novel, “The Beach Club,” which was recognized as People Magazine’s Beach Read of the Week. This marked the start of a prolific career, with her novels consistently featuring Nantucket as a backdrop, incorporating local businesses and landmarks. Her bibliography consistently grew, with her later works, starting from “Barefoot” in 2007, being published by Little, Brown and Company. In 2019, New York magazine acknowledged her widespread appeal by dubbing her “the queen of beach reads.”
Beyond her literary achievements, Hilderbrand has seen her work adapted for screen. Her 2018 novel, “The Perfect Couple,” a murder mystery, was adapted into a Netflix miniseries in 2024, starring notable actors like Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber. Additionally, her “Paradise Trilogy” and other books like “The Five-Star Weekend,” “The Hotel Nantucket,” “28 Summers,” and the “Winter Street” series are in various stages of screen development. After publishing her 30th book, “The Swan Song,” Hilderbrand announced a transition from Nantucket-focused novels, with her latest inspiration being a two-part series co-written with her daughter, Shelby Cunningham, exploring a New England boarding school setting, beginning with “The Academy” in 2025. She is also a breast cancer survivor, diagnosed in 2014, and advocates for women through her #mamastrong initiative.
