Ellen White, born on May 9, 1989, in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England, developed an early passion for football. Starting in her father’s ‘Mini Ducks’ soccer academy, she quickly demonstrated exceptional talent, playing with boys due to the absence of a girls’ team. At eight, she was scouted by Arsenal, initiating a distinguished youth career before joining Chelsea in 2005 at 16. During her three seasons with Chelsea, White consistently led as the top scorer. She then moved to Leeds Carnegie in 2008, where she recovered from a cruciate ligament injury to help the team win the FA Women’s Premier League Cup in 2010. Her prolific goal-scoring abilities earned her a reputation as a formidable forward within women’s football.
White returned to Arsenal in 2010, where she enjoyed significant success, contributing to three league titles, two FA Cups in 2011 and 2013, and three FA WSL Cups from 2011 to 2013. After her second stint with Arsenal, she joined Notts County in 2014, facing another ACL injury but returning to form. From 2017 to 2019, at Birmingham City, she earned the WSL’s Golden Boot in the 2017–18 season by scoring 15 goals in 14 matches, showcasing her consistent performance. In May 2019, White signed with Manchester City, where she became the second player in WSL history to reach 50 goals and later the all-time record goal scorer with 55 goals. She also secured the Women’s FA Cup in 2020 and the Women’s League Cup in 2022 with Manchester City.
Internationally, White represented England at various youth levels before making her senior debut in 2010. She competed in three FIFA Women’s World Cups (2011, 2015, 2019), notably earning the Bronze Boot at the 2019 tournament as a joint-top goalscorer with six goals. She also represented Great Britain at the 2012 and 2020 Summer Olympics, scoring six goals in Tokyo 2020. White is England’s all-time record female goalscorer with 52 international goals. She played a pivotal role in England’s victory at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022, scoring twice in a record 8–0 win against Norway. Her career culminated in retirement in August 2022, celebrated with an MBE in the 2023 New Year Honours for her services to football. White continues to engage with the sport and inspire future generations, evidenced by her participation in charity events like Soccer Aid, where she became the first female goal scorer.
