Emily Coutts was born in Canada on July 4, 1989. She pursued her education in Toronto, earning a BFA in acting from York University. Her professional acting career began in 2011 with an appearance in “The Bright Side of the Moon.” Early in her career, she also took on roles in various short films and television series, steadily building her resume.
Coutts’ career progressed with several film and television projects. She acted in the film “Crimson Peak” (2015) and episodes of television series such as “The L.A. Complex” (2012), “Transporter: The Series” (2012), “The Next Step” (2013), and “Murdoch Mysteries” (2013-2017). A significant turning point in her career was her casting as Lt. Cmdr. Keyla Detmer in “Star Trek: Discovery” (2017), a role she held for 52 episodes between 2017 and 2024. This role brought her wider recognition. In addition to acting, Coutts has expanded her involvement in the industry by writing, producing, and directing several projects, including the short film “Dear Jesus” (2020), where she served as an executive producer and writer, and the short films “Rosebud” (2024) and “They Choose You” (2023), which she directed and produced.
Her work behind the camera includes co-creating and co-producing the web series “Beattie & Mae” with Melanie Leishman. Coutts also directed and produced the short film “They Choose You” (2023) and directed and served as executive producer for “Rosebud” (2024). She has continued to act in projects such as “Clarice” (2021) and provided voice work for the animated series “Glowbies” (2021). She is currently developing her first feature film, demonstrating her ongoing commitment to various aspects of film and television production.
