John Abraham

Born in Mumbai, India, on December 17, 1972, John Abraham grew up in a mixed heritage family. His father, Abraham John, is a Syrian Christian from Kerala, and his mother, Firoza Irani, is a Zoroastrian Parsi. He attended Bombay Scottish School, earned a bachelor’s degree in honors economics from Jai Hind College, and pursued an MBA from Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai. Prior to his acting career, John worked in media at Time & Space Media Entertainment Promotions Ltd and Enterprise Nexus. His path to public recognition began when he won the Gladrags Manhunt competition in March 1999 and subsequently achieved first runner-up in Gladrags Manhunt International in the Philippines. This led to a successful career as one of India’s highest-paid supermodels, with modeling assignments in Singapore, Hong Kong, London, and New York. To prepare for his transition to acting, he also completed an acting course at Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting Institute.

John Abraham made his acting debut in 2003 with the erotic thriller “Jism.” Although the film’s box office performance was modest, his work was noted by critics. He followed this with roles in “Saaya” (2003) and “Paap” (2003). His breakthrough came in 2004 with his portrayal of the antihero Kabir in the action film “Dhoom,” which was a significant commercial success and earned him a Filmfare Award nomination. Throughout the 2000s, he diversified his roles, starring in comedies like “Garam Masala” (2005) and “Taxi No. 9211” (2006), and critically acclaimed dramas such as “Water” (2005) and “Kabul Express” (2006). A notable achievement during this period was “Water” being nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006. His performance in “New York” (2009) was also well-received, contributing to the film’s box office success.

In the 2010s, Abraham continued to star in action films and comedies, including “Force” (2011), “Desi Boyz” (2011), and “Housefull 2” (2012). He further expanded his career by venturing into film production under his banner, J.A. Entertainment, with the critically and commercially successful film “Vicky Donor” (2012), for which he received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. His career also saw him take on diverse roles in films like “Madras Cafe” (2013), which earned critical acclaim, and the commercially successful “Satyameva Jayate” (2018) and “Pathaan” (2023). Beyond his film endeavors, John is an advocate for animal rights and co-owns the Indian Super League football team NorthEast United FC.
