Emily Watson

Emily Watson was born on January 14, 1967, in Islington, London, to Katharine, an English teacher, and Richard Watson, an architect. After completing her studies in English literature at the University of Bristol and initially being rejected from drama school, she pursued her acting aspirations, working in clerical and waitress jobs before gaining acceptance. In 1992, she joined the Royal Shakespeare Company, where she honed her craft in various theatrical productions such as “All’s Well That Ends Well” (1992) and “The Taming of the Shrew” (1993). Her breakthrough came in 1996 with her debut film role as Bess McNeill in Lars von Trier’s “Breaking the Waves,” a performance that earned her an Academy Award nomination and established her as a prominent international talent. She continued to receive critical recognition, notably for her portrayal of cellist Jacqueline du Pré in “Hilary and Jackie” (1998), which garnered another Oscar nomination.

Throughout her career, Watson has demonstrated versatility across various genres and platforms. Her filmography includes a diverse range of roles in significant productions such as “The Boxer” (1997), “Gosford Park” (2001), “Punch-Drunk Love” (2002), and “Red Dragon” (2002). She also took on acclaimed television roles, notably as Ulana Khomyuk in the HBO miniseries “Chernobyl” (2019), which earned her Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Watson’s performances have consistently been recognized with numerous awards, including the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress for “Appropriate Adult” (2011) and the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Performance for “Small Things Like These” (2024). In 2015, she was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her contributions to drama.
