Emmanuelle Grey Rossum, born on September 12, 1986, in New York City, began her performing career at a young age within the Metropolitan Opera Children’s Chorus. From age seven, she performed in over 20 operas, singing in six languages, alongside figures such as Plácido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti. She also received direction from Franco Zeffirelli in “Carmen” before her teenage years brought a transition from opera to acting. Rossum pursued her education at the Spence School in Manhattan and earned a high school diploma by age 15 through Stanford University’s Education Program for Gifted Youth. She later enrolled at Columbia University, studying French, art history, and philosophy.
Rossum made her television debut in 1997 as Abigail Williams in “As the World Turns.” Her early film work included an Independent Spirit Award-nominated role in “Songcatcher” (2000) and a significant part in Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River” (2003). Her breakthrough came in 2004 with two distinct films: the sci-fi disaster movie “The Day After Tomorrow” and the film adaptation of “The Phantom of the Opera.” For her portrayal of Christine Daaé in “The Phantom of the Opera,” she received a Golden Globe nomination, a Critics’ Choice Award for Best Young Actress, and a Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor.
From 2011 to 2019, Rossum gained wide recognition for her role as Fiona Gallagher in the critically acclaimed Showtime series “Shameless.” During her tenure on the show, she also made her directorial debut, illustrating a career progression into production. Her producing credits include the 2022 Peacock series “Angelyne,” where she also starred, and the 2023 Apple limited series “The Crowded Room.” Rossum has also released two albums, “Inside Out” (2007) and “Sentimental Journey” (2013), with the latter reaching number one on the U.S. Billboard Jazz Albums chart.
