Emo Philips

Born Philip Soltanec on February 7, 1956, in Chicago, Illinois, Emo Philips developed a unique comedic style characterized by a fidgety, nervous, and highly intelligent persona delivered in a modulated falsetto voice. His early career in stand-up comedy quickly earned him recognition, with his album “E=mo²,” recorded live at Caroline’s in Manhattan, winning the 1985 New Music Award for Best Comedy Album. This album, along with “Live at the Hasty Pudding Theatre,” cemented his reputation as a joke writer, earning praise from fellow comedians such as Jay Leno, who called him “the best joke writer in America.”

Philips further expanded his career into acting, writing, and producing, showcasing his versatility across various platforms. His filmography includes notable roles such as Joe Earley in the 1989 film “UHF” and a cameo as Salvador Dalí in “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” (2022). He also contributed to the “Meet the Parents” franchise, serving as executive producer and writer of the title theme song for the 1992 independent film and as an associate producer for the 2000 remake. In television, Philips has appeared in live-action series such as “Miami Vice” (1985) and “Crashing” (2019), and provided voice acting for animated shows like “Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist” (1995–1996), “Home Movies” (1999–2004), “Adventure Time” (2012–2016), “Welcome to the Wayne” (2017–2019), and “Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe” (2020).

Throughout his career, Philips has toured extensively, including with “Weird Al” Yankovic on his “Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour” in 2018 and its 2022 iteration. He has been a guest on British television shows like “8 Out of 10 Cats” (2006) and appeared on numerous American late-night talk shows, including “Late Night with David Letterman.” His distinct comedic voice and enduring presence in entertainment have earned him a place in various “greatest comedians” lists, reinforcing his influence in the comedy landscape.
