About

Henry Enrique Estrada was born on March 16, 1949, in East Harlem, New York City. His mother, Carmen Moreno, was a seamstress. Estrada, of Puerto Rican descent, initially considered a career in law enforcement before turning to acting after joining the drama club at Louis D. Brandeis High School. His acting career began in 1970 with his film debut as Nicky Cruz in “The Cross and the Switchblade.” He steadily took on more roles, including a small appearance as a police officer in “The New Centurions” (1972) and a significant part as Julio, a flight engineer, in the disaster film “Airport 1975.” He continued to build his filmography, appearing as Ensign “Chili Bean” Ramos in the military historical epic “Midway” in 1975.

Estrada’s breakthrough role came in 1977 when he began co-starring as Officer Frank “Ponch” Poncherello in the police drama television series “CHiPs.” This role brought him widespread recognition and made him a household name. While filming an episode of “CHiPs” in 1979, Estrada sustained injuries, fracturing several ribs and breaking both wrists after being thrown from his motorcycle. Despite this, he became a pop culture icon during this period, being voted one of “The 10 Sexiest Bachelors in the World” by People magazine in 1979. Following a salary dispute with NBC in 1981, he briefly left the show, returning to complete its run until 1983. In the 1990s, he transitioned to Spanish-language telenovelas, playing Johnny, a Tijuana trucker, in “Dos mujeres, un camino,” which became a notable success in Latin America. He also co-hosted the outdoor adventure show “American Adventurer” from 1994 to 2004.

His career continued with diverse appearances in the late 1990s and 2000s, including a guest role as himself in “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” and as a voice actor for Cartoon Network’s “Sealab 2021.” In 1998, Estrada reprised his iconic role in the TV movie “CHiPs ’99.” He also had a recurring role as Eduardo Dominguez in the daytime drama “The Bold and the Beautiful” in 2001. Beyond acting, Estrada has engaged in public service. He was an Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) investigator for eight years in Bedford County, Virginia, and currently serves as a reserve police officer in St. Anthony, Idaho. His dedication to public safety extends to his role as the international “Face” of D.A.R.E., a campaign against drugs, and his support for organizations like the American Heart Association and the California Highway Patrol’s “car seat inspection and installation” program.
