Tia Carrere

Born and raised as Althea Rae Duhinio Janairo in Honolulu, Hawaii, Tia Carrere began her career unexpectedly. She was discovered in a grocery store as a teenager, which led to her first female lead role in the film “Aloha Summer” (1988). Following this initial success, she relocated to Los Angeles, where she steadily built her acting portfolio. Early career highlights included a recurring role on the daytime soap opera “General Hospital” from 1985 to 1987, alongside guest appearances in popular television series such as “MacGyver,” “Quantum Leap,” and “Married… with Children.” This foundational work provided a platform for her later breakthrough roles.

Carrere gained widespread recognition for her iconic portrayal of Cassandra Wong in “Wayne’s World” (1992) and its sequel “Wayne’s World 2” (1993). These roles showcased her acting abilities and established her as a singer, as she performed all her own songs for the movie soundtracks. Her filmography continued to expand with notable performances as Juno Skinner in James Cameron’s “True Lies” (1994), opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger, and as computer expert Jingo Asakuma in “Rising Sun” (1993), starring Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes. She also took on the lead role of Sydney Fox in the syndicated action-adventure series “Relic Hunter,” which ran from 1999 to 2002.

Beyond her live-action work, Carrere lent her voice to the character of Nani Pelekai in Disney’s animated film “Lilo & Stitch” (2002) and its subsequent entries. In the musical sphere, she has received significant acclaim, earning four Grammy nominations and winning two Grammy Awards for her Hawaiian music albums ‘ikena and Huana Ke Aloha. Her work in music further solidified her versatile career. More recently, Carrere has appeared in projects such as Michael Patrick King’s series “AJ & the Queen” (2020) and the film “Easter Sunday” (2022). She has also maintained a presence in television with roles in “Never Have I Ever” (2023) and “NCIS: Los Angeles” (2023).
