Mark Alexander Knox, often known as Flex Alexander or Flex, is an American actor, comedian, and dancer who was born on April 15, 1970. Alexander’s first television appearance was on Doug E. Doug’s short-lived ABC sitcom Where I Live in 1993. Despite its critical praise, the show was discontinued the following year. Alexander later appeared in episodes of Sister, Sister and The Cosby Mysteries as a guest star before relocating to Los Angeles in 1995 to pursue acting full-time. He received a lead part in another short-lived sitcom, Homeboys in Outer Space, in 1996.
Later same year, Alexander co-starred in another short-lived series, Total Security, produced by Steven Bochco. Following the conclusion of Total Security, Alexander guested on Brooklyn South and The Parkers, as well as in many films, including Backroom Bodega Boyz, a 1998 direct-to-video production, and She’s All That (1999). During the first season of the UPN sitcom Girlfriends, Alexander played Maya Wilkes’ husband Darnell from 2000 until 2001. He departed Girlfriends to star in the UPN sitcom One on One, which he wrote and produced, as single father Mark “Flex” Washington. Alexander was nominated for three NAACP Image Awards and two BET Comedy Awards for his work on the show.
In 2004, he received another NAACP Image Award nomination for his role as Michael Jackson in the VH1 television biopic Man In The Mirror: The Michael Jackson Story. Alexander returned to One on One for two more seasons, before co-starring in the 2006 film Snakes on a Plane, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, and starring in the 2007 horror picture The Hills Have Eyes 2. He also co-starred alongside Danny Glover in Clement Virgo’s Poor Boy’s Game. Alexander and his wife Shanice starred in their own reality programme, Flex & Shanice, which ran for three seasons on OWN from 2014 to 2016.
