Florian Richard Wirtz, born on May 3, 2003, in Pulheim, Germany, began his youth football career at SV Grün-Weiss Brauweiler. He later joined 1. FC Köln in 2010 and developed through their youth system for a decade. In January 2020, Wirtz transferred to Bayer 04 Leverkusen, a move that sparked controversy due to an alleged gentleman’s agreement between the clubs. Despite this, he quickly made an impact, making his senior professional debut for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on May 18, 2020, at just 17 years and 15 days old. This made him the club’s youngest-ever player in the league, surpassing Kai Havertz. On June 6, 2020, he scored his first goal against Bayern Munich, becoming the youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history at 17 years and 34 days, a record later broken by Youssoufa Moukoko.
Wirtz continued his rapid ascent, signing a contract extension with Leverkusen until 2023 in December 2020. In January 2021, he scored a winning goal against Borussia Dortmund. By February 2021, he had scored his fifth career Bundesliga goal, becoming the first player to achieve this milestone before turning 18. His contract was further extended to 2026 on his 18th birthday, May 3, 2021. He set another record in November 2021 by becoming the first player under 19 to score more than ten Bundesliga goals, and in December 2021, he became the youngest player to reach 50 Bundesliga appearances. Despite a significant anterior cruciate ligament injury in March 2022 that kept him out for ten months, Wirtz made a strong return in January 2023. The 2023-24 season was particularly successful, as he played a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s unbeaten domestic double, securing the German championship and the DFB-Pokal, and earning the Bundesliga Player of the Season award. He also contributed significantly in the UEFA Europa League, leading his team to the final.
In June 2025, Florian Wirtz transferred to Liverpool FC for a club-record fee, making him one of the most expensive footballers globally and marking the largest transfer in Bundesliga history. He debuted for Liverpool on August 10, 2025, in the FA Community Shield, providing an assist. Internationally, Wirtz has represented Germany at various youth levels, winning the UEFA European Under-21 Championship in 2021. He made his senior national team debut in September 2021 and scored his first senior goal for Germany in March 2024. In UEFA Euro 2024, he became the youngest German player to score in the European Championship and continued to impress in the UEFA Nations League, achieving multiple goals and assists. His playing style is characterized by strong technique, off-the-ball movement, and a high work rate, allowing him to excel as an attacking midfielder or winger.
