Folake Olowofoyeku, born on October 26, 1983, in Lagos, Nigeria, is an accomplished actress and musician. The youngest of twenty children, she initially pursued studies in economics before transitioning to the arts. She earned a B.A. with honors in theater from City College of New York and also distinguished herself on the basketball court, competing with CCNY’s Beavers in the NCAA. Following her graduation, Olowofoyeku cultivated her acting career through off-Broadway theater performances in New York City.
Her career expanded into television with guest roles in numerous episodic series, including “30 Rock,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “White Collar,” “Modern Family,” “How to Get Away with Murder,” “The Gifted,” “Colony,” and “Westworld.” A significant turning point came with her recurring role as Lyfe in the final season of “Transparent.” In film, Olowofoyeku notably starred as Minerva Jefferson in the 2017 movie “Death Race 2050” and voiced Amara in the 2024 Disney animated prequel “Mufasa: The Lion King.” Additionally, she lent her voice to the character of Priestess in the “Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series” video games.
Olowofoyeku rose to prominence with her title role in the CBS half-hour comedy “Bob Hearts Abishola,” where she portrayed Abishola alongside Billy Gardell from 2019 to 2024 across 95 episodes. Her performance garnered critical acclaim, including the 2019 Breakout Actress in TV Award from the Sync Con Honors Awards and an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. Beyond acting, Olowofoyeku is a musician known as The Folake, playing Afro-beat electronic music, guitar, and piano. She holds a diploma in audio engineering from The Institute of Audio Research and appeared as David Bowie’s bassist in his 2013 music videos for “The Stars (Are Out Tonight)” and “The Next Day.”
