Lily Chloe Ninette Thomson, known professionally as Lily James, was born on April 5, 1989, in Esher, Surrey, England. Her parents, Ninette Mantle and James Thomson, were both actors and musicians. Her paternal grandmother, Helen Horton, was an American actress. James attended Arts Educational School in Tring and later trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, graduating in 2010. She adopted the stage name Lily James in honor of her father, who passed away in 2008.
James began her career in television with roles in the 2010 BBC production of ‘Just William’ and ITV’s ‘Secret Diary of a Call Girl’ in 2011. Her breakthrough came with her portrayal of Lady Rose MacClare in the period drama ‘Downton Abbey’ (2012–2015), a role that expanded into a main character in the fourth and fifth series. This television success led to significant film opportunities, including the title role in Kenneth Branagh’s 2015 live-action Disney film ‘Cinderella’, where she also made her singing debut. She continued to take on varied roles in films such as ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ (2016) and ‘Baby Driver’ (2017).
Her career progressed with notable performances in films like ‘Darkest Hour’ (2017), ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’ (2018), and ‘Yesterday’ (2019). A significant career milestone was her critically acclaimed portrayal of Pamela Anderson in the 2022 biographical miniseries ‘Pam & Tommy’, earning her nominations for a Golden Globe and a Primetime Emmy Award.
