Freddy Adu was born Fredua Koranteng Adu on June 2, 1989, in Tema, Ghana. His family relocated to Rockville, Maryland, in the United States in 1997. Adu became a U.S. citizen in February 2003. He gained recognition for his soccer talent at a young age, including an MVP award at an under-14 tournament featuring Italian youth teams Lazio and Juventus. This early promise led to significant attention, with some comparing him to Pelé.
Adu became the youngest American athlete to sign a major league professional contract in over a century when D.C. United selected him as the first overall pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft at age 14. He debuted in MLS on April 3, 2004, and scored his first professional goal on April 17, 2004, making him the youngest player to achieve these milestones in MLS history. During his time with D.C. United from 2004 to 2006, he played 87 games, scoring 11 goals. He was part of the D.C. United team that won the MLS Cup in 2004 and was named to the MLS All-Star team twice. His early career also included being named the 6th player on Major League Soccer’s 24 under 24 list in 2011.
Following his success in MLS, Adu’s rights were acquired by S.L. Benfica in Portugal in 2007 for a reported $2,000,000. While at Benfica, he made 11 appearances and scored two goals. He was loaned to several European clubs, including AS Monaco (2008), Belenenses (2009), Aris FC (2010), and Çaykur Rizespor (2011), gaining diverse international experience. Adu later returned to MLS, signing with the Philadelphia Union in 2011, where he played 35 games and scored 7 goals across two seasons. His career also included stints with Bahia in Brazil (2013), and trials with several European clubs before playing for KuPS in Finland (2015), Tampa Bay Rowdies (2015-2016), Las Vegas Lights FC (2018), and Österlen FF in Sweden (2021). Adu also had extensive international experience with the U.S. National Team, earning 17 caps and representing the U.S. in five international youth tournaments, including captaining the U.S. U-20 team in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where he became the first player to score a hat-trick in both the U-17 and U-20 World Cups. He further represented the U.S. at the 2008 Summer Olympics. In 2021, after his time with Österlen FF, Adu ended his professional playing career.
