Freddy Adu

Freddy Adu made history as the youngest American athlete to sign a major league professional contract in over a century, selected as the first overall pick in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft by D.C. United. He debuted in MLS on April 3, 2004, and scored his first professional goal on April 17, 2004, setting records as the youngest player to achieve these milestones in MLS history. Prior to this, his exceptional talent was recognized early, earning him an MVP award at an under-14 tournament featuring Italian youth teams Lazio and Juventus.

His European experience expanded through loan stints at AS Monaco (2008), Belenenses (2009), Aris FC (2010), and Çaykur Rizespor (2011). He earned 17 caps with the U.S. National Team, becoming a significant figure in national team history. Adu represented the U.S. in five international youth tournaments, captaining the U.S.

U-20 team in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, where he became the first player to achieve a hat-trick in both the FIFA U-17 World Cup (2003) and the FIFA U-20 World Cup (2007). He also represented the U.S. at the 2008 Summer Olympics. In 2011, he was named to Major League Soccer’s 24 under 24 list.
