Gabriela Soukalová, born on November 1, 1989, in Jablonec nad Nisou, Czech Republic, embarked on her biathlon career in 2005, following in the footsteps of her mother, Gabriela Svobodová, an Olympic silver medalist in cross-country skiing. Soukalová first competed in the World Cup on December 11, 2009. After a period of development, she achieved her first World Cup victory in the 7.5 km sprint on December 14, 2012. Her performance continued to improve, leading to a bronze medal in the mixed relay at the 2013 World Championships in Nove Mesto. She concluded the 2012-2013 season with three consecutive victories in Khanty-Mansyisk: the 7.5 km sprint, 10 km pursuit, and 12.5 km mass start.
The 2013-2014 season marked a significant professional advancement with three individual victories in Östersund and Ruhpolding. During the 2014 Sochi Olympics, Soukalová earned two silver medals in the mass start and mixed relay, along with a bronze medal in the 4×6 km relay. She also secured her first discipline career title by winning the small crystal globe for the Individual. The 2015 World Championships in Kontiolahti saw her win a silver medal in the individual event and a gold medal in the mixed relay. Her career culminated in the 2015-2016 season, where she secured the overall World Cup title and three discipline titles: sprint, pursuit, and mass start, making her the first Czech biathlete to achieve such a feat.
Soukalová concluded her biathlon career in 2019 due to a leg injury, formally announcing her retirement in May of that year. Throughout her career, she demonstrated consistent high-level performance, characterized by strong shooting accuracy (95% prone, 89% standing in the 2015-2016 season) and effective skiing. In 2017, she was named Czech Sportsperson of the Year, and in February 2024, she was inducted into the International Biathlon Union (IBU) Hall of Fame, recognizing her contributions to the sport. Post-retirement, Soukalová has transitioned into television presenting for TV Prima and has openly discussed her experiences with eating disorders, publishing her autobiography “Jiná” (meaning “Different”) in April 2018. A documentary about her life, “Gabriela Soukalová: Pravda se pořád vyplatí,” premiered in March 2024.
