Gary Caldwell

Gary Caldwell was born in Stirling, Scotland, on April 12, 1982. His professional football career began in England, navigating through various clubs from youth academies to senior teams. Early in his career, he saw loan spells at Darlington, Hibernian, Coventry City, and Derby County before establishing himself. His time as a central defender was marked by a versatile playing style, adept at also performing as a right-back and defensive midfielder. He earned significant recognition playing for Celtic, where he contributed to multiple league titles, and later for Wigan Athletic, where he achieved FA Cup success. Caldwell represented Scotland internationally, earning 55 caps and receiving a place in the Scottish FA International Roll of Honour for surpassing 50 appearances.

Following his retirement as a player, Caldwell transitioned into football management and coaching. He managed Wigan Athletic, leading them to a League One title and promotion back to the Championship in the 2015-2016 season. Subsequent managerial roles included spells at Chesterfield and Partick Thistle. He later held coaching positions at Newcastle United’s U23s and Manchester City, focusing on player development and loan oversight. Caldwell re-joined Hibernian as an assistant manager before taking on his current role as manager of Exeter City in October 2022. Under his leadership, Exeter City has navigated the competitive landscape of League One, working with a strategic focus on the club’s financial realities and long-term development.

His career highlights also include individual accolades such as the Scottish Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year in 2008-09 and the Wigan Athletic Player of the Season in 2011-12. These awards underscore his consistent performance and leadership qualities on the field. As a manager, he received the League One Manager of the Month award in February 2016 and the LMA League One Manager of the Year in 2016, recognizing his effective leadership and strategic capabilities.
