Fredric Scott Satterfield was born on December 21, 1972, in Hillsborough, North Carolina. His football career began at Orange High School as a quarterback and continued at Appalachian State University from 1991 to 1996. He started 27 games as a quarterback between 1992 and 1995 under Coach Jerry Moore. In his senior year of 1995, Satterfield led the Mountaineers to an undefeated regular season, reaching the quarter-finals of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs, and earned first-team all-conference honors. He graduated in 1996 with a degree in physical education.
Satterfield transitioned into coaching at Appalachian State, initially as a receivers coach in 1998, then mentoring running backs (1999–2002) and quarterbacks (2003–2008). He played a key role in evolving the team’s offense from a power-I to a spread formation, serving as the primary signal-caller for teams that consistently ranked in the top ten across multiple NCAA I-AA offensive categories. After brief stints as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Toledo (2009) and offensive coordinator at Florida International (2010–2011), he returned to Appalachian State in 2012 as assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. In 2013, Satterfield was promoted to head coach, leading the Mountaineers through a successful transition from FCS to FBS, securing three Sun Belt Conference championships and guiding his teams to four bowl appearances, with three wins. He achieved a 51–24 overall record at Appalachian State, including a 38–10 conference mark, becoming the first coach to lead a school from the FCS level to FBS and immediately earn three consecutive bowl wins.
In 2018, Satterfield resigned from Appalachian State to become the head coach at the University of Louisville for the 2019 season. His first year at Louisville was successful, with the team achieving an 8–5 record and winning the 2019 Music City Bowl, earning him the ACC Coach of the Year Award. His Louisville teams averaged over 200 rushing yards and 30 points per game, reaching two bowl games. He then moved to the University of Cincinnati as head coach in December 2022. On November 11, 2023, he led Cincinnati to their first Big 12 Conference win. His career head coaching record across major schools stands at 85-57, with a 4-1 bowl record.
