Gary Stevenson, born in Ilford, East London, in 1986, began his journey from humble beginnings. He attended Ilford County High School and later Valentines High School, excelling academically with four A-Levels. In 2005, he enrolled at the London School of Economics to study mathematics and economics. In 2008, at the age of 21, Stevenson secured an internship at Citibank through a trading-based card game, which soon led to a full-time position as an interest rate trader. He quickly demonstrated an exceptional aptitude for finance, leveraging his predictions about economic inequality and its impact on interest rates. This period saw him profiting significantly during the 2008 financial crisis and the Greek government-debt crisis in 2011.
Stevenson’s career at Citibank was marked by remarkable financial achievements, claiming to be the bank’s most profitable trader globally in 2011, generating a peak profit of $35 million. He accumulated considerable wealth, becoming a millionaire by his mid-20s. However, despite his financial success, Stevenson experienced a period of disillusionment and mental health challenges, leading to a breakdown. In 2014, at the age of 27, he retired from actively trading, leaving Citibank with substantial deferred stock. His experience in the financial industry, coupled with his personal struggles, motivated him to pursue a different path focused on economic advocacy and education.
After his departure from Citibank, Stevenson pursued an MPhil in Economics at the University of Oxford, where he focused on the impact of inequality on asset prices. This academic pursuit deepened his understanding of systemic economic issues, leading him to launch “GarysEconomics” on YouTube in 2020. This platform became a central tool for his campaign against economic inequality, attracting over 1.4 million subscribers and 162 million views. He is also the author of “The Trading Game,” a memoir published by Penguin Books in 2024, detailing his experiences in finance and his perspectives on the global economy. Stevenson actively contributes to policy debates, advocating for wealth taxation and appearing across various media outlets, including The Guardian, BBC, and LBC.
