Gemma Jones

Gemma Jones is a critically acclaimed English actress known for her extensive work across film, television, and stage, bringing depth and authenticity to each role. After earning a gold medal from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Gemma Jones quickly established herself as a formidable talent on the British stage, appearing as Gilda in the original stage production of ‘Alfie’ at the Mermaid Theatre in 1962. Throughout the 1960s, she performed with regional theater companies including the Nottingham Playhouse and Birmingham Repertory Theatre, before becoming a prominent figure with the National Theatre at the Old Vic and the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1970s. Her notable stage roles include Hippolyta/Titania and later Hermione (1981) and Paulina (1993) in separate productions of ‘The Winter’s Tale’, and Portia in ‘The Merchant of Venice’ (1980).

She also became a beloved figure as Madam Poppy Pomfrey in the ‘Harry Potter’ film series, starting with ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ (2002). Further film credits include Queen Victoria in ‘Shanghai Knights’ (2003) and Helena in Woody Allen’s ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger’ (2010). Her dedication to her craft was celebrated with a BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2015 for her role as Mary in the BBC television film ‘Marvellous’ (2014). Her versatile television career continued with roles such as Connie James in ‘Spooks’ (2007–2008), The Cailleach in ‘Merlin’ (2011), and Aunt Anne Lister in the critically acclaimed HBO/BBC series ‘Gentleman Jack’ (2019–2022).

More recently, Jones portrayed Ivy in the Oscar-winning film ‘Rocketman’ (2019) and Molly Anning in the independent drama ‘Ammonite’ (2020). She is set to reprise her role as Pamela Jones in the highly anticipated ‘Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy’, scheduled for release in 2025, underscoring her enduring presence in both film and television.
