Gemma Sutton was born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, and developed an early interest in performing arts. She pursued formal training in musical theatre at the Arts Educational Schools London, where she graduated in 2007 with a first-class degree. Following her graduation, Sutton quickly established herself in the London theatre scene, appearing in significant productions and showcasing her vocal and acting abilities. In 2008, she performed in the original London production of “Gone with the Wind” at the New London Theatre, taking on the role of Careen O’Hara and serving as the understudy for Melanie. She also featured in the London premiere of “Imagine This” as an understudy for Rebecca, and later contributed to its original London cast recording.
Sutton’s career progressed with notable roles in both classic and contemporary theatre. Her work at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre included performances in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Macbeth,” “Lady Be Good,” and as Fay in “Sandy Wilson’s The Boy Friend.” She expanded her stage presence to various pantomime productions, including playing the Princess in “Jack and the Beanstalk” at Sheffield Lyceum and Wendy in “Peter Pan” at the Marlowe Theatre. A significant milestone was her performance as Louise in the West End Revival Production of “Gypsy” in 2015, a role she reprised in “Gypsy: Live from the Savoy Theatre” in 2015. More recently, in 2019, she returned to the West End in “Girl From the North Country” as Katherine Draper and as Young Sally in the London return engagement of “Follies.” In 2025, she is scheduled to join the UK and Ireland tour of “TINA – THE TINA TURNER MUSICAL,” playing Rhonda.
Beyond the theatre, Gemma Sutton has made appearances in television, including a role as Beryl Marsden in the 2014 TV Mini-Series “Cilla” and as Tasha Wright in an episode of “Doctors” in the same year. She also diversified her artistic endeavors by creating and performing her cabaret, “Unexpected Songs,” and establishing The Voice Box, a mobile live music stage. These ventures underscore her commitment to live performance and her entrepreneurial spirit within the entertainment industry. Her continued engagement across various platforms highlights her adaptable talent.
