Born in Bournemouth, England, on September 17, 1984, Geva Mentor CBE has established herself as one of the world’s premier netball defenders. Her career began at a young age, selected for England at just 15 years old in 2000, and making her senior international debut in 2001. Mentor’s longevity and impact on the sport are significant; she earned 175 caps for England, playing in six Commonwealth Games and multiple Netball World Cups. Off the court, her approachable nature and dedication to positive impact have made her a respected role model. Her athletic abilities extend beyond netball, having been a junior British trampolinist and engaged in kayaking, sailing, and horse riding.
Mentor’s club career spans elite leagues in both the UK and Australia. She played for Team Bath, winning Netball Superleague titles in 2005–06 and 2006–07. She then moved to Australia, where she achieved remarkable success in the ANZ Championship and later in Super Netball. With the Adelaide Thunderbirds, she secured a premiership in 2010 and was named Grand Final MVP. Her time with the Melbourne Vixens saw another premiership win in 2014, three club Best & Fairest awards, and two runner-up acknowledgements. Her leadership was further highlighted when she captained the Sunshine Coast Lightning to back-to-back Suncorp Super Netball Premierships in 2017 and 2018, earning both club and league MVP accolades, and being named Suncorp Super Netball GK of the year in 2017.
In international competition, Mentor achieved the pinnacle of her sport, leading the England Roses to their first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in 2018. This historic victory, a one-goal thriller against the Australian Diamonds, solidified her status as an English netball icon. For her services to netball, she was awarded a CBE in 2019. After her storied career with Australian clubs, she returned to the UK to play for Leeds Rhinos. Mentor retired from international netball following the 2023 Netball World Cup and announced her retirement from domestic competition at the end of the 2025 Netball Super League season. Her career highlights also include two Honorary Doctorates, one in Sport from the University of Chichester (2022) and another in Arts from Bournemouth University (2022). She also released her autobiography, ‘Leap’, in 2019.
