Gianluigi Donnarumma was born on February 25, 1999, in Castellammare di Stabia, Italy. He began his football journey at the ASD Club Napoli academy in 2003. At the age of 14, in 2013, he moved to AC Milan’s youth system, the club he had supported since childhood. Donnarumma quickly progressed through the youth ranks, playing in age groups above his own. By February 2015, just before his 16th birthday, he received his first senior team call-up, demonstrating his exceptional talent at an early age. In March 2015, he signed his first professional contract with AC Milan.
Donnarumma made his competitive Serie A debut for AC Milan on October 25, 2015, at 16 years and 242 days old, becoming the second-youngest goalkeeper to do so in Serie A history. He quickly became AC Milan’s first-choice goalkeeper, a position he held for six seasons until 2021. During his time at Milan, he notably helped the club secure a second-place finish in the 2020–21 Serie A season, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League after an eight-year absence. His individual accolades at Milan included being named Serie A’s Best Goalkeeper of the Year and the IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper.
In June 2021, Donnarumma transferred to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on a free transfer, signing a five-year contract. At PSG, he continued his career progression, culminating in a significant achievement in 2025 when he won the UEFA Champions League as part of a continental treble. Following this success, in September 2025, Donnarumma joined Premier League club Manchester City on a five-year deal. He made his debut for Manchester City in the Manchester derby on September 14, 2025, keeping a clean sheet in a 3-0 victory against Manchester United. Internationally, he first represented Italy at the U15 level in 2014 and made his senior international debut in September 2016, becoming Italy’s youngest-ever goalkeeper. In 2021, he played a crucial role in Italy’s UEFA Euro 2020 triumph, where he was named Player of the Tournament, a historic achievement for a goalkeeper. He also captained Italy at UEFA Euro 2024.
