Giovanni Vincenzo Infantino, born on March 23, 1970, in Brig, Switzerland, is a Swiss-Italian football administrator. He holds dual citizenship through his Italian immigrant parents and is fluent in French, German, Italian, Arabic, English, Portuguese, and Spanish. Infantino studied law at the University of Fribourg before beginning his career as the Secretary General of the International Center for Sports Studies (CIES) at the University of Neuchâtel.
Infantino joined UEFA in August 2000, progressing through the ranks to become the Director of UEFA’s Legal Affairs and Club Licensing Division in January 2004. He was appointed Deputy General Secretary of UEFA in 2007, and later, Secretary General in October 2009. During his tenure at UEFA, he played a significant role in initiatives such as the introduction of Financial Fair Play, enhancing commercial support for smaller national associations, and overseeing the expansion of UEFA Euro 2016 to 24 teams. He was also instrumental in the development of the UEFA Nations League and the Euro 2020 tournament format.
In February 2016, Infantino was elected President of FIFA, a position he has since been re-elected to in 2019 and 2023. As FIFA President, he has overseen the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. His leadership has also involved spearheading the expansion of the FIFA World Cup to 40 teams and the planning for upcoming tournaments, including the 2026 and 2030 World Cups across multiple continents, and the 2034 FIFA World Cup in Saudi Arabia. He was also elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee in January 2020.
