Gil Hanse was selected to design the Rio 2016 Olympic Golf Course, marking golf’s triumphant return to the Olympics after more than a century. After earning his Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University in 1989 and receiving the prestigious William Frederick Dreer Award, Hanse founded Hanse Golf Course Design in 1993. His longtime design partner, Jim Wagner, joined the firm in 1995. The firm quickly established its unique approach, emphasizing in-field design, restoration, and renovation, creating courses that appear natural and unforced.
Early original designs include Craighead at Crail Golfing Society (1998) and the acclaimed Boston Golf Club (2005). Building on his early successes, Hanse’s vision for the Rio 2016 Olympic Golf Course cemented his global reputation, demonstrating his ability to craft world-class layouts for major international events. Further showcasing his talent for original design, he delivered Castle Stuart in Scotland (2009), which quickly garnered international acclaim. Beyond new constructions, Hanse has become a leading figure in the restoration and renovation of historic courses, meticulously working to bring them back to their original design intents while also incorporating modern improvements.
The same year saw the opening of his design for The Park West Palm (2023). Looking ahead, construction is scheduled to begin in December 2024 on High Grove, Florida, further solidifying his position as one of the most sought-after and influential golf course architects in the industry. His consistent delivery of critically acclaimed and strategically compelling courses underscores his enduring impact on contemporary golf course architecture.
