The amazing Sue Smith is a football pundit and former professional footballer, who has played as a winger and forward for Tranmere Rovers, Leeds United, Lincoln Ladies, and the Doncaster Rovers Belles between 1994 and 2016. She has also appeared 93 times for England, scoring 16 goals.
Born and raised in Lancashire, Smith started playing for Tranmere Rovers as a teenager, and eventually signed for Leeds United (also known as Leeds Carnegie) in 2002. She remained at the Yorkshire club until 2010 when, after they failed to join the FA WSL, she signed for Lincoln Ladies. In December 2011 she joined Doncaster Rovers Belles. Injury brought her playing career to an end during the 2016-17 season.
Smith made her international debut for England as a 17-year-old in 1997, and has gone on to play for them 93 times in total up until 2012. She has twice won the Nationwide International Player of the Year award, in 1999 and 2001, and in 1999 she was also voted Players’ Player of the Year.
Away from the playing field, Smith started a career in media, and has been a regular contributor to the Yorkshire Evening Post’s women’s football section, as well as working as a pundit and commentator for BBC Sport, Quest, and Sky Sports.
