Born Glenda Veronica Close on March 19, 1947, in Greenwich, Connecticut, Glenn Close pursued her passion for acting after attending The College of William & Mary, where she double majored in theater and anthropology. She made her Broadway debut in 1974 in “Love for Love” and her television debut in 1975 in “Great Performances.” Early in her career, she received a Tony Award nomination for her role in the musical “Barnum” in 1980.
Her breakthrough into Hollywood arrived in the 1980s, beginning with her critically acclaimed role as Jenny Fields in “The World According to Garp” (1982), which earned her an Academy Award nomination. She followed this with two more Oscar nominations for supporting roles in “The Big Chill” (1983) and “The Natural” (1984). Close solidified her status as a leading actress with iconic performances in “Fatal Attraction” (1987) and “Dangerous Liaisons” (1988), receiving Academy Award nominations for Best Actress for both. On stage, she garnered three Tony Awards, including Best Actress in a Play for “The Real Thing” (1984) and “Death and the Maiden” (1992), and Best Actress in a Musical for “Sunset Boulevard” (1995).
In the 1990s, Close transitioned into more diverse roles, including Cruella de Vil in “101 Dalmatians” (1996) and its sequel, and providing the voice of Mona Simpson in “The Simpsons.” The 2000s saw her focus on television, notably starring as Patty Hewes in the series “Damages” (2007–2012), for which she won two consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards. She continued to receive critical acclaim in film with roles in “Albert Nobbs” (2011) and “The Wife” (2017), earning further Academy Award nominations. Close is recognized for her immersive acting style and her significant contributions to theater, film, and television.
