About

Gordon James Ramsay was born on November 8, 1966, in Johnstone, Scotland. Growing up, he initially pursued a career in football, playing under-14s at age 12 and having a trial with Rangers F.C. in mid-1984. However, a serious knee injury forced him to end his football aspirations. At 19, he shifted his focus to culinary arts, enrolling at North Oxfordshire Technical College to study hotel management. He gained early experience as a commis chef at Wroxton House Hotel before moving to London.

Ramsay further developed his skills by working for renowned chefs like Marco Pierre White at Harveys and Albert Roux at Le Gavroche. He then spent three years training in France with Michelin-starred chefs Guy Savoy and Joël Robuchon. In 1993, he returned to London as head chef at the three-Michelin-starred La Tante Claire. Later, he became head chef with a 10% share in the Rossmore, renamed Aubergine, which earned two Michelin stars by 1997. In 1998, Ramsay opened his own establishment, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, in Chelsea, London, which achieved its third Michelin star in 2001, making him the first Scot to do so. His restaurant group, Gordon Ramsay Restaurants, founded in 1997, has received 17 Michelin stars in total, with eight currently held. He was appointed an OBE by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006 for services to the hospitality industry.

Ramsay transitioned into television, rising to fame with the British miniseries “Boiling Point” in 1999. His media persona is characterized by his strict demeanor and critical comments on competitive cookery and food programs. He has hosted numerous popular television shows including the British series “Hell’s Kitchen” (2004) and “Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares” (2004–2009, 2014), and their American counterparts, “Hell’s Kitchen” (2005–present) and “Kitchen Nightmares” (2007–present), as well as “MasterChef” (2010–present) and “MasterChef Junior” (2013–present). Forbes estimated his 2020 earnings at US $70 million, placing him at No. 19 on its list of highest-earning celebrities. He also holds Guinness World Records for the ‘Fastest time to fillet a 10 lb fish’ (2017), ‘Longest Pasta Sheet Rolled in 60 Seconds’ (2017), and with Nick DiGiovanni, the ‘Largest Beef Wellington’ (2023).
