Greg Mcelroy

Born on May 10, 1988, in Los Angeles, California, Greg McElroy moved to Southlake, Texas, at age 10 when his father joined the Dallas Cowboys. He attended Carroll Senior High School, where he achieved significant success in football. In 2005, during his senior year, McElroy led his team to a 16-0 season and a Texas 5A state championship, passing for 4,636 yards and 56 touchdowns for which he was named the Texas 5A Player of the Year and an EA Sports All-American. He initially committed to Texas Tech but later chose the University of Alabama, where he was redshirted in his first year.

At Alabama, McElroy became the starting quarterback in 2009. He led the Crimson Tide to an undefeated 14-0 season, securing the 2009 SEC Championship and the 2010 BCS National Championship. During the 2009 SEC Championship Game, he earned MVP honors. His college career concluded with a 24-3 record. He also excelled academically, graduating from Alabama in three years with a degree in business marketing and earning a Master of Science degree in sports management in 2010 with a 4.0 GPA. He was a Rhodes Scholarship finalist in 2010 and named the 2010 ESPN/CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year.

McElroy was drafted by the New York Jets in the seventh round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He played for the Jets until 2012, making his NFL debut in December 2012 and starting one game. He suffered a concussion at the end of the 2012 season. He then moved to the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad in 2013 before announcing his retirement from the NFL in March 2014. Shortly after, he began a new career as a college football analyst for ESPN’s SEC Network, expanding to ESPN games in 2016. He co-hosted ‘Thinking Out Loud’ on SEC Network for two seasons and currently co-hosts ‘McElroy & Cubelic in the Morning’ on WJOX in Birmingham, in addition to hosting ESPN and Omaha Productions’ ‘Always College Football’ podcast.
