About

Edward Lansing Gordon III, born on August 17, 1960, in Detroit, Michigan, pursued a career in journalism despite initially considering law. The son of Olympic gold medalist Ed Gordon Jr., he graduated from Western Michigan University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in communications and political science. His career began with an unpaid internship at Detroit’s PBS affiliate WTVS from 1983 to 1985, followed by a role as host of the local talk show ‘Detroit Black Journal’ in 1986. During this early period, he also started freelancing for Black Entertainment Television (BET), laying the groundwork for a long and impactful association with the network.

Gordon’s journalism career is marked by his consistent focus on African-American social issues and popular culture, beginning when he joined BET full-time in 1988 as the anchor of ‘BET News’. He gained significant recognition for his hour-long interview series ‘Conversation with Ed Gordon’, where he interviewed prominent figures like President Bill Clinton, Tupac Shakur, Sidney Poitier, and Whitney Houston. A notable achievement was his exclusive interview with O. J. Simpson in 1996, the first since Simpson’s acquittal. His career continued with stints at NBC News (1996-2000), where he anchored for MSNBC and contributed to ‘Today’ and ‘Dateline NBC’, covering major events such as political conventions and the impeachment of Bill Clinton. He returned to BET in 2000, hosting ‘BET News’ nightly and later ‘BET Tonight’, conducting critical interviews with figures like R. Kelly and Senator Trent Lott, earning praise for his firm yet polite grilling of subjects.

After BET reorganized its news division in 2002, Gordon continued contributing until 2004, interviewing figures like John Kerry. He then served as a correspondent for CBS News’ ’60 Minutes II’ from 2004 to 2005 and hosted NPR’s ‘News & Notes’ from 2005 to 2006. From 2006 to 2010, he hosted the syndicated ‘Our World with Black Enterprise’. Gordon made further returns to BET, hosting ‘Weekly with Ed Gordon’ (2010-2011) and later a newsmagazine on Bounce TV (2016). In 2020, he authored ‘Conversations in Black: On Power, Politics, and Leadership’. Most recently, in 2023, he rejoined BET as a reporter for ‘America in Black’, a co-production with CBS News, where he notably interviewed President Joe Biden in 2024, continuing his legacy of impactful journalism and storytelling.
